Project Description The project is a new house in the established suburb of Red Hill. The length of the block faces North and slopes down from street to back fence. The brief was for a modest size residence as the owners’ children had grown up and left home. They wanted a contemporary house that was comfortable to live in, efficient to run and had a close relationship with the garden with opportunities for outdoor living.Four core ideas guided our design:1. Plan the house so that the main living areas and master bedroom face North and the garden. Create opportunities for outdoor living through linked external timber decks along this façade.2. Maximise the Northerly sun and natural light to living areas through high ceilings and large windows.3. Allow clear and easy movement through the house via a central circulation spine along its length. Provide single level access from the garage to the main areas of the house.4. Give the house a distinctive contemporary character using strong horizontal roof lines and a palette of finishes comprising Nimmitabel Bluestone, Western Red Cedar and Spotted Gum against a background of charcoal colour cladding and dark bricks.
